It’s been a little while since I’ve stood upon my soap box and shared my feelings about nasty chemicals in products. I have mentioned Phthalates before within my post about endocrine disrupters; they are one of the “dirty dozen” of chemicals to avoid.
So what are they?? From the FDA’s website: “Phthalates are a group of chemicals used in hundreds of products, such as toys, vinyl flooring and wall covering, detergents, lubricating oils, food packaging, pharmaceuticals, blood bags and tubing, and personal care products, such as nail polish, hair sprays, aftershave lotions, soaps, shampoos, perfumes and other fragrance preparations.”
So basically, they are crazy hard to avoid! To see if your products have this ingredient, look for “phthalate, DEP, DBP, DEHP and fragrance”. If it is included in the product’s fragrance, this doesn’t have to be listed on the label. Boooooo! It is added to fragrance to help the scent linger. Um, no thanks!
The health concerns with this chemical are endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, cancer. Head over to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics website for further details about the health concerns of Phthalates.
It is so important to be a label reader. I choose to use Radiantly You personal care and cleaning products to help cut back on my family’s exposure to this chemical.
